United States military veterans are known for sacrificing much for our freedom. Roll Call is a Fort Worth-based volunteer organization that serves, honors, and supports local veterans. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Roll Call has partnered with Civil Air Patrol to make regular check-ins with its members. Unable to meet in person during the pandemic, Roll Call needed a way to ensure member’s needs were met.
Alliance Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol regularly volunteers with Roll Call at their monthly meetings. Often they provide color guard, serve food, and escort veterans and their guests to their seats. The squadron’s leadership uses this opportunity to teach young cadets about volunteerism. The cadets hear stories of veterans and learn what military life is like. The veterans are very excited when they get to participate in Roll Call’s monthly luncheons.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, while Roll Call paused its meetings, Alliance Composite Squadron has volunteered to make regular contact with every affected veteran in the organization. Over 300 veterans now receive phone calls, letters in the mail, and even emails and texts. The impact of these personal contacts with the veterans is immeasurable. Retired Army Air Corp Lt Fiske Hanley (former WWII Japanese Prisoner of War) said “I can’t wait to see all my friends and family after this pandemic is over and I am especially excited for Roll Call. Thank you for checking in on me!“
The pandemic has affected people in a lot of ways physically and mentally. However, these short contacts with our local heroes serve to encourage both the one who is calling and the one who answers.
